La Casa del Equipal y las Artesanías

LEARN MORE

The Equipales are Mexican prehispanic furniture made out of wood and leather. The word derives from the Nahuatl "ICPALLI" that means seat.

The classic Equipal is made with materials from the state of JALISCO. The wood is cut during the full moon to gain its protection and avoid wood flies. To elaborate an Equipal, two kinds of wood are used, one named "Palo Dulce" that is the structure, and the wood "Posa Panal" that are stakes from a particular beautiful fibber. Both are put together by means of a vegetal fibber called "ixtle hilado".

The manufacture of Equipales is a family tradition.
An Equipal in the family meant that the family was from a "good cradle"

Throughout the time, the requirements of the society have changed. This changes have made it necessary for craftsmen to fashion new and different designs of Equipales. Among this variety we can find small ones and big ones, with reed twigs or perhaps leather and fabric.

Our equipals are fumigated with maximum quality products that are also environmental friendly. The wood is varnished to achieve greater durability and protection and the leather is treated with special products to soften it, to paint it and to protect it from humidity.

La Casa del Equipal uses colours, textures, materials, traditions and design to bring to others the essence of the authentic Mexican furniture and to keep our legacy alive.

THE EQUIPALES ARE EXPRESSIONS OF A CULTURAL INHERITANCE, SYMBOLS OF A MYTHICAL PAST AND THE GLIMMER OF AN ANCIENT CULTURE.
